Ditch Lilies

Bulbs thrown from wagon or carriage

on someone's journey across the south

in hopes of lightening the load

but they weren't lost forever

come spring the ditches are in full bloom

from Georgia to Texas

a ditch can help us rememer

beauty doesn't go away even when discarded

it will be there for someone else to see

lilies in my great grandmother's garden

and my grandmother's garden

now in my mother's garden

and someday in mine
