I Keep Forgetting

i keep forgetting
the beauty of the river
until I'm there again
was it always this green?

did birds always perch
on that island there?
and is there sun enough
to share with turtles?

my eyes catch copper
and red's every sister
did the trees always
shimmer on the distant shore?

i walk the banks
long enough to remember
there is sun enough
for birds and turtles and me
