the cardinal had the first song
loud and clear
from the top of the oak
commanding sky, leaf & sun
like he was the one
to pull the string and
make the day begin
he sang
before the sun rounded the corner
and daffodils unfolded in cool peace
before grey doves roused
to find their feeder empty
I stepped across dewy grass
with an offering of seed
* the photo is the first daffodil of the season from my front yard.
